The Codex Angelicus is taken less to be a true account of events and more of an allegory.
In this timeline, the Angelic Benedictions stand for something completely different. Lucifer's rebellion failed in so far as heaven and earth were not sealed off from one another thus Metatron was able to cross the divide and wreck havoc. Metatron descended into earth to retrieve the sword, the crown and the glory and hell was created to imprison Lucifer and all the archangels who rebelled. Thus the only people left with any power was Metatron and Sandalphon.
Metatron is slightly forgiving of humans in this timeline for the Pope assists Metatron in capturing heaven's treasures. Aside from trapping the archangels who rebelled into hell, they stripped all of them of their powers and dissipated them into earth. Giving the humans fragments of the archangel's power was his gift for their assistance.
In order to take a seat in the College of Cardinals, you have to prove that you have the gift - which is the Angelic Benedictions.

Origin
In the beginning, The Almighty created the heavens and the earth. There was light and there was shadow. To govern his will, the archangels were created. To carry his message, the angels were created. And in his image, he created the humans of the earth.
The Almighty expended his power in the act of creation and all the archangels could feel his power fade over time. Thus he created a plan for succession, which Metatron would govern in his stead. Metatron believed that humans were too unreliable to be true images of The Almighty and thus believed they were largely unworthy to inherit his will.
The archangels loved humanity, having observed them for so long. Lucifer loved humanity the most to the point that he was willing to commit the greatest sin, rebellion against the Creator's Will. He believed that The Will was not just something that only a select few would be able to execute, but every human carried a portion of the Creators Will in them, being in their image.
The rebellion was long and terrible, but there were several things that the archangels did to preserve humanity. If they could not change Metatron's will, then they would severely weaken him so that he could not execute it. This meant taking away the three symbols that governed heaven.
The first act was to take the Creator's Glory, the eternal flame that burned with the Creator's light. It is from the Creator's Glory that the genesis of the world began and upon it, it shall end if it is ever extinguished. Lucifer, being the Morningstar that matched the luminosity of the creator was able to wield the Creator's Glory and take it away from heaven into earth.
The second act was to steal Metatron's Sword. Michael, the one who was able to fight Metatron on equal terms was able to defeat Metatron long enough to defeat him in combat.
The third act was for Gabriel to seduce Sandalphon. Gabriel being in tune with the melodies of all that wrapped heaven was able to whisper the words that Sandalphon wanted to hear - that she was not simply Metatron's other half, that she was actually her own being.
The fourth act was Metatron sealing away heaven, sealing earth and creating hell. Knowing that he had lost the power to effectively execute his will, he did the unthinkable himself and defiled the Creator's work.
Raphael protected the archangels throughout their perilous journey.

Metatron - The first angel. As the first creation, he represents masculine, forceful, light qualities. His role is to enforce the Will of the Creator. His symbol is the sword.
Sandalphon - The half angel. Made from the qualities that the Creator did not put in Metatron. Feminine, persuasive, dark. qualities. Her role is to enforce the Desire of the Creator. Her symbol is the winged harp.
Lucifer - The second angel. Created as a more refined version of Sandalphon without the power. His role is to love humanity. His symbol is the star.
Michael - The third angel. Created as the protector of humanity. His symbol is the bannered spear.
